The total enrolment of the school determines the Education Department’s allocation of teachers to that school.
A variety of factors are taken into account when placing children in a particular class. These include -
§ Special needs of the child (eg learning, medical).
§ Academic ability (to ensure that classes are well balanced).
§ Ability of the child to work independently.
§ The need to separate some children.
§ Class placement in previous years.
Essentially the beliefs which underpin multi-age grouping include the following:
· Learning is not related to chronological age
· Children learn at different rates
· Learning is facilitated by considering the whole child i.e. social, moral, emotional, physical, cognitive, creative areas of development are taken into account.
