The major issues that needed to be addressed in the initial stages of implementing the Innovations project included
- Purchase of 100 Galaxy Tab 10.1
- Find solutions to the management of the Galaxy Tabs
- Connectivity to the Rostrata Primary School Wireless Network
- Sourcing extra funding for charging trolleys and Tab protective covers
- Sorting out a model of use that which would ensure greatest educational value in using the devices
Purchase of 100 Galaxy Tab 10.1
Sourcing of 100 Samsung Galaxy Tabs 10.1 is made more difficult with the release of a new model. Maybe it is possible to get the older model at a reduced price.
Dick Smith . $440 older model all GST inc
JB Hi Fi Commercial $445 new Model
CDM Computers (1st) $479 new model
CDM Computers (2nd) $420 new model
We weren’t aware that there was a mandatory contract with CDM to supply the devices. This was only recently introduced in June 2012. Initially the quotation from CDM wasn’t competitive as the recommended price through the Government contract is $479 GST inc .
Having a better quote from JB Hifi , help from the State Manager of Samsung and buying power of !00 devices managed to get the prices down to $420 GST inc.
The other complication is the new model is yet to arrive in Australia. Expected to arrive August 2012.
Find solutions to the management of the Galaxy Tabs
The two major issues to do with the management of a large number of devices is the charging and the synchronization of all settings and apps on the devices.
We a little research it was found PC Locs with their partner Cambrionx had a solution. They have a 32 bay trolley that will charge and synchronize mobile devices. Unfortunately at the moment this is only available for the IPad but a model for the Samsung Galaxy will be available later this year. At a cost of around $4000 they aren’t cheap and the synchronization part is not fully sorted.
