Applications and Google Play

All android devices access a repostitory of applications from a site called Google Play . There are thousands of free apps available as well as paid for applications from developers.

It is hoped that we able to have one account with Google Play and synchronize all the free apps seamlessly onto our devices.

Presently devices  can't access Google Play from the DET's network as it is blocked on their firewall. We have a request pending with the DET to unblock the firewall by opening up the relevant port.

This is going to be very important if the DET will not open the port then the only alternative might be to pay for another wireless broadband connection into the school where the devices can connect and download the applications. Lets hope not .

Congratulations Terry on the incredible effort you have put in on the quest to use a tablet other than iPad in schools. Your work will be invaluable for all schools in the near future and I hope your DET Directors appreciate the talent you have in the IT field.

Hi, please contact me and let me know how this is going for you? We have recently purchased 15 Lenovo Tablets and they are fantastic. I prefer them over Ipads massively, they are lighter, come with a pen, a usb port, hdmi port, sd card reader and various other benefits. The only issue I have is I cannot access the Google Play App. I also put in a request to the Filtering team, but haven't had a response in a long time. Have you discovered any other work around for this? Thanks

Hi Benjamin...The port required 5228 is not open on the DET's firewall. I have an application in for them to open it. Hopefully it will be resolved soon and everybody with Android devices can access Google Play.
